HIKING ON MADEIRA ISLAND: THE LEVADA DOS TORNOS PATHS LEADS TO A HIKERS PLAYGROUND!
WHY BUY IN MADEIRA?

Above Funchal are narrow pathways, rocky paths and amazing gorges leading to every hiker’s paradise!

Embedded in the rocky cliff side is an overflow of ferns, flowers and lichens surging down the side of the mountains. Enormous trees surround and overlook the pathways throughout the Portuguese Island.

Those who venture the beautiful Island can experience the Levada hike without the fear of losing their way. Throughout the Greenland there are many trail markers pointing towards in all destination such as the Rabacal valley that sits besides an unnatural, concrete canal.

The beautiful Island of Madeira allows those searching for total and utter tranquillity to achieve such peace whilst strolling down the trails along the canals. These paths do not permit people to walk in pairs as they are narrowly designed, branching off into different directions.

Past the blossoming lilies, laurels and sweet scented eucalyptus trees, the canal leads to remote areas of the Portuguese Island. It is advisable for hikers to be fully equipped when travelling through such areas due to poor structured slopes.

An adventure awaits those who tour areas of the Levada walk where it is too narrow for pathways, very slippery to pass or where safety rails that once stood along the steep passages no longer remain. The option you can take in this situation is to hop onto the Levada wall and continue your journey. However those who suffer from a fear of heights should avoid great exposures to Levada routes.

Madeira has its fill of slopes and mountains, cliffs and gorges, while flat areas are a rarity. Seen from above, the island looks like a crumpled-up piece of paper. The biggest and most spectacular attraction of this island is Nature itself. Two-thirds of Madeira is under natural protection law, and large areas are purely for hiking - every season of the year.

The north of the Island offers the most ideal and fantastic area for hiking because of its adventurous coastal roads. Here, Nature is untamed. Highlights include the huge and nearly devoid of human habitation UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site 'Laurisilva' or laurel forest, located above the village of Santana, as well as a trek up to the top of Madeira's mountain world, the 1,862-metre Pico Ruivo.
